This year (2023) we have partnered with Conservation Collective who build and support foundations supporting local grass roots conservation work, across the world, to protect and restore nature on land and at sea. They work towards the following environmental impacts: helping native species to thrive; preserving, protecting and regenerating natural habitats, slowing down and adapting to climate change, and reducing pollution.
We will be championing 2 special projects in Mallorca with the Mallorca Preservation Foundation.
Stellaris Project - Shark & Ray conservation
As apex predators, sharks help maintain the balance of ocean ecosystems. Unfortunately, their survival is threatened by overfishing, bycatch and the overall effects of climate change. These species play a vital role in maintaining the balance of the food chain in marine ecosystems and their decline could have serious ecological consequences. We are supporting Mallorca Preservation Foundation project which aims to breed endangered nursehound sharks in captivity at the Palma Aquarium and Cabrera Interpretation Centre. Once they are mature and ready to produce, they will be released back into the wild. A big part of this project is providing environmental education and raising awareness of the vulnerability of sharks. The instinctive - albeit irrational - fear of them is partly to blame for their negative image; but the harsh reality is that they are very vulnerable species because they are late maturing and slow growing.

Wetland Restoration with WWF
Wetlands are a hotspot for biodiversity and play a key role in food security and climate change mitigation. Intensive agriculture, water pollution, and severe droughts threaten the viability of these ecosystems. This project aims to restore the degraded wetlands of s'Estany des Ponts and the Maristany which are two of the largest lakes within the extensive wetland complex in the Bay of Alcudia. This will then provide an appropriate breeding habitat to bird populations, while also creating new opportunities for education and learning.

Did you know?
More than three quarters of the land-based environment and about 66% of the marine environment have been significantly altered by human actions. Ecosystem restoration has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 2.9 Gt per year, compared to 0.8 Gt per year from the electrification of vehicles.
