Ultimate Guide: Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Packing List

Ready to embark on your Duke of Edinburgh expedition? Packing can be both exciting and daunting, but fear not – we have got you covered!

Let us take you through our recommended packing list; delving into what is needed from your waterproof jackets all the way to outdoor equipment to make your journey as smooth as possible.

Waterproof Jackets, Fleece and T-shirt

A good waterproof jacket is going to be your biggest ally during your expedition. It will keep you dry and comfortable in unpredictable weather, you’ll need a jacket that will retain body heat. However, it should be breathable as you do not want moisture trapped in the jacket.

How you layer your clothing is very crucial. For both the fleece and t-shirt, you should avoid cotton and opt for polyester. In wet conditions, polyester keeps the moisture away from the skin keeping you dry. It also provides better insulation than cotton. Cotton tends to retain moisture which will leave you feeling cold and uncomfortable.

Waterproof Trousers

Waterproof trousers are extremely essential for this expedition. This is what will keep your lower body dry by keeping moisture out, leaving you comfortable despite the weather conditions. This also prevents you from any chances of getting hypothermia and chaffing if your trousers got wet.

A good fit is also necessary, you want to avoid something tight and get trousers with enough room in them. Try to find trousers that are adjustable by the waist.

Rucksacks & Liner

A rucksack to carry all your essential gear. This includes your water bottle, food, navigation tools, first aid kit and any personal items. The rucksack needs to be big enough to carry all this. Most importantly, it needs to be comfortable on your back. The rucksack should be able to distribute the weight of your gear evenly, it should have padded shoulder straps, hip belts and chest straps. This will allow you to carry your gear for an extended period.

Walking Boots & Hiking Socks

Walking boots provides support for your feet and ankles especially when going through uneven terrain with a heavy rucksack. You need to look for boots with ankle support as this reduces the risk of a sprained or twisted ankle.

They need to be waterproof with a breathable membrane. This is to prevent water from getting into the shoe and to allow moisture to escape.

An extremely important note to make, the shoes need to be broken in!

When looking for hiking socks, try and find socks with cushioned soles to prevent your feet from getting too sore and to reduce fatigue. Look for socks made of wool which will assist in regulating the temperature.

Tents & Sleeping Bags

Tents and Sleeping bags are one of the most essential gears for an outdoor expedition. A tent provides the needed shelter to protect you from all the elements. This is where you finally can get some rest, therefore there are a few things to consider.

The tent needs to be lightweight, easy to pack and carry around especially if it is going in your rucksack. Look for tents with water-resistant features that can withstand rain and wind. It also needs to have ventilation features to improve airflow inside the tent and reduce condensation. The sleeping bag should provide insulation and warmth in those cold nights. Look for one that is compressible, lightweight and easy to move around with.
