What to look for in a hiking boot?

When you are looking for a new pair of hiking boots, the information out there can be mind blowing. For the launch of our new Dura Pro Boot , we have put together this simple list of benefits you should be looking for, illustrating why our new technical hiking boots, having gone through numerous tests, would be the perfect partners on your next hike.

There are several things you should look for in a walking boot to enhance your enjoyment out on the hill.

Fit: It is essential you get a good fit with your boots. Your foot should feel secure but allowing your toes to wiggle a bit. Our ghillie lace to toe fastening, through top locking hardware delivers the ultimate precision fit.

Comfort: This is key. Sore feet can spell disaster on a hike. We ensure that comfort comes from a shaped and padded foam collar & tongue but also the added plant based odour-elimination technology offers a day-long fresh feel.

Durability: You want your hiking boots to last for years, so look for ones which are made from robust materials and mesh to prolong their life. We only use top quality suede and anti-abrasion mesh in our boots.

Grip: You want to trust your boots on every type of terrain you might encounter. The Dura Pro boots feature the Industry leading Vibram 'Traction Lug' outsole. This outsole improves grip by increasing the tread surface area, giving stability and 25% increased traction (to standard outsoles).

Shock absorption: Boots that absorb impact will make you feel less tired during your hike. The Dura Pros have an EVA midsole and insole that cushion the foot and help distribute the pressure evenly. They are made using repurposed algae through BLOOM technology. Flexibility: You want a boot that allows for natural movement and the Dura Pros have rubberised toe and heel bumpers and a moulded heel hold system for enhanced 360 degree protection and increased foot stability.

Water resistance: Though you can’t always avoid water getting into the top of your boots (unless you wear a gaiter), a waterproof boot is always a good option to keep your feet dry, even when walking through wet grass. We fit a top grade AquaDry waterproof and breathable bootie in our Dura Pros, using flame lamination, which is better for the environment than standard methods and provides outstanding waterproofness and comfort.

Sustainability: We take our commitment to being as sustainable as we can, very seriously and as well as those things (BLOOM and Flame lamination) already mentioned, we only use gold standard tanneries for the suede in our uppers, as they create less waste and they use less water in production. We have reduced our overall water consumption by choosing waterless dyed linings. And we fit the Dura Pro boots with 100% recycled laces.

Terrain and environment: You can never predict the terrain you might encounter, so make sure you are prepared for every eventuality. The new Dura Pro boots are perfect for hiking and have all the key features you need for a long trek. All you then need to worry about, is whether you have packed enough snacks in your rucksack!
