How to Prevent Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes are among the most persistent and irritating pests on the planet, and one of the most dangerous. They can always seem to find you, and quite often you’ll only know they were there when you find a trail of bites along your ankle. Beyond their annoyance, mosquitoes can also carry diseases, so protecting yourself from their bites is essential. In this post, we’ve provided effective ways to prevent mosquito bites, how to keep mosquitos away at night and more, helping you stay bite-free and safe during your outdoor adventures.

3 Ways to Prevent Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes and other flying pests and bugs have harangued and plagued people across the globe for millions of years. You’d think humanity might have found a permanent solution to the problem but mosquitoes are relentless and innumerable. We do still have a few ways to prevent mosquitoes from biting you however.

Wear Protective Clothing & Anti-Insect Clothing: It’s quite simple, long sleeve tops and trousers will reduce the chances of being bitten by a mosquito. Of course, most mosquitos are found in hotter regions so temperature regulation becomes more of a challenge. You’ll find that long sleeve tops and trousers that are designed for hotter environments will be breathable and moisture wicking which will help with the heat drastically. There is also insect-repellent clothing that has been designed to repel a number of biting insects including mosquitoes, both denying them access to your skin & outright warding them off.

Install Screens: Insect screens are an excellent way to prevent mosquitoes from biting. They’ll need to be installed throughout your lodgings and require you to be vigilant when making sure they’re used correctly. Leaving a screen open for 30 minutes can let one or two in and you might find yourself with multiple bites in the morning.

Eliminate Standing Water: If you’re expecting to be at one location for long enough then it’s effective to make sure that there’s no standing water near to your lodgings. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. And they’re excellent at finding it. Look out for any containers left with water in or even gutters and drains.

How to Keep Mosquitos Away at Night

Mosquitoes tend to be more active during the night, or at least more able to gain access to an easy sleeping meal, especially of course around dawn and dusk. Here are some ways can protect yourself while you sleep.

Use Mosquito Nets: Similar to insect screens except focussed around your bed. Mosquito nets are, for a large portion of the world, the most effective means of preventing mosquito bites. It is often the last line of defence against mosquito bites. Some nets will also come with mosquito repellent properties making them even more effective.

Cool and Dry Your Room: Reducing body heat and sweat will help deter mosquitoes, as they are attracted to warmth and moisture. Consider using fans or air conditioning if available, which can also help create a less humid environment less attractive to mosquitoes.

Create a Breeze by Using a Fan: There are a number of ways mosquitos are able to find you in the dark. Two of which are heat and smell. A fan will keep you cooler through the night, though potentially not enough to ward away a hungry mosquito. They also make it harder for mosquitoes to fly and land on you if you have the fan directed at you correctly. And lastly, mosquitoes are able to detect you through the carbon dioxide you release. Having a fan will disperse the carbon dioxide making it even harder for them to detect you.

Wear Mosquito-Repellent Clothing: Again this is a great way to stop mosquitoes from find a place to bite. If you’ve covered your arms and legs then you’ll have reduced the area mosquitos have to land and bite.

What Time do Mosquitos Come out

Mosquitoes are active throughout the entire day. Though they are more active during certain times of the day. Knowing the more active times will help you better prepare your preventative measures.

Dusk and Dawn: Studies show that mosquitoes are particularly active during dawn and dusk when temperatures are cooler and humidity is higher. Avoid outdoor activities during these peak mosquito times to minimize bites. Risk activities would be camp setting. When camping, if you’re able to, set up camp early. This will reduce the risk of mosquitoes flying into your open tent whilst propping it up, during peak mosquito hours.

Warm, Windless Nights: Mosquitoes tend to be more active on warm, calm nights. A breeze makes it more of a challenge for them to fly and land, but conversely, mosquitos can do very well on a still evening. If you are out on a warm and low wind evening then it’s best to make sure you’re wearing long-sleeved shirts or tops along with trousers. Again, insect-repellent clothing will add another stage of defence against mosquitoes when you’re exposed or at risk of bites.
