Peak District Hikes - Solomons Temple
Come with us on a scenic 7.5km easy hike to Solomon’s Temple, starting at the Regatta store in the picturesque town of Buxton, in the Peak District. This is an amazing trail, which gives you the opportunity to take in Poole’s Cavern, (entry fees apply) an impressive limestone cavern, and Solomon’s Temple, a Victorian folly on a hill with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Solomon's Temple Circular Walk
The route starts and ends at the Café below Go Ape and the reception for Poole’s Caverns. Start by following the road down and then turn right into the Buxton Community Temple Fields. Turn right onto Fern Road, which leads up to a footpath which runs through a stable yard, so make sure to say Hi to the horses! Following the clearly marked footpath, you’ll be surrounded by the calming views of the Peak District, take it all in as you cross a small field and over the stye. This is where you’ll have to cross Grin Low Road. Be careful, and look left and right, as cars do fly up and down!
The footpath winds its way through a field which had some cows who were silently observing us as we ambled on by. It is advisable to keep any dogs on leads through this section, for the safety of both the farm animals and your furry friends! At the top of the small hill, Solomon’s Temple will come into view in the distance on your right. As you bypass a farm yard, be mindful to close any gates behind you. The farm track is home to lots of abandoned vehicles, full of history and style! Make sure to check them out!
Continue to follow the wide gravel track through the sheep fields, again, it’s advisable to keep your dogs on a lead here! There are lots of spots along the track for a quick outdoorsy shot of you in all your glory! The hills all have their own unique shape and curve which is beautiful to see!
A beautiful little bridge stands over a small pool of water, backed by a luscious green wood. At the end of the track, you’ll come to a gate which leads to the road.
Be careful when crossing, and go straight over and up the road leading towards Grin Low and Buxton Country Park.
This is where you can have a more hands on explore, climbing up the rocks to gain and even better view of the snaking roads and hills in the Peaks.
Solomon’s Temple will now be within a few minutes’ walk. The path is surrounded by wildflowers and luscious greenery at this time of year. The hill which is home to the Temple is covered in grooves and dips, which makes for a fun explore! Solomon’s Temple looks mystical in the distance.
When you reach the Temple, make sure to have a break and a good explore both around it and up it. The views from the top of the steep stair case are beautiful! When you’re ready to head back down, follow the path back to the entrance of the field and the path on the right will take you back down to the carpark/café, through the woods.
